OpenAI launches Strategic Futures policy blog
OpenAI has stood up a new Strategic Futures team and launched a blog called Intelligence Age, naming concentration of power — not misuse or misalignment — as the AI risk it considers largest.
The inaugural post, written by Dean Ball, describes Strategic Futures as "a small team" organized around one question: "how should free society be restructured to preserve individual rights and agency while accommodating the emergence of transformative AI?" It argues that concentration-of-power risk is "the largest, most serious, and most conceptually challenging to address" category in AI safety and policy.
The argument is historical rather than technical. Political power, Ball writes, has always rested on labor — soldiers, police, a civil-military bureaucracy — funded by taxes on human wages and production, which forced rulers into a society-wide bargain. Autonomous systems could let states project force without cooperative personnel; machine intelligence could let them draw revenue "from the outputs of data centers" and automate the bureaucracy itself. The result: "the people, broadly conceived, may have only a small seat at the negotiating table, or perhaps none at all," even if voting continues. Citing Madison's "parchment barriers" and the Founders' Newtonian metaphors of orbits and spheres, the post concludes that the answer is not maximal decentralization but a balance in which no actor or small set of actors can dominate.
The post carries an explicit disclaimer that it reflects the author's views, "not necessarily those of any other OpenAI employees or of the organization as a whole," and that the same applies to future posts on the blog.
